Cotton bud and ear cleaning--a loose tip cotton bud?

Complications that arise from self-cleaning the external ear canal are common. This is a prospective study using standard questionnaire on the practice of ear cleaning in 50 subjects. A loose tip cotton bud was also shown to them to assess if it was acceptable to replace their current cotton bud. Thirty six percent of them clean their ears by introducing an object into the ear canal once or mor...

How does a virus bud?

How does a virus bud from the plasma membrane of its host? Here we investigate several possible rate-limiting processes, including thermal fluctuations of the plasma membrane, hydrodynamic interactions, and diffusion of the glycoprotein spikes. We find that for bending moduli greater than 3 x 10(-13) ergs, membrane thermal fluctuations are insufficient to wrap the viral capsid, and the mechanic...

Acute Finger Paralysis: A Case Report of Cortical Ischemic Stroke

Somatotopic distribution of motor cortex and sensory fibers is theoretically fully understood. We present a case of stroke, mimicking peripheral palsy, with finger paralysis attributed to cortical lesion. The patient’s brain MRI may be useful to further understand the somatotopic representation of fingers in precentral and postcentral gyrus.

To bud where no bud has gone before

Acrobatic flexibility of the translocon T he machinery that inserts membrane proteins into the ER is unexpectedly fl exible, say Kida et al. Even with several segments of a multispanning membrane protein already looped around inside the pore, more can be inserted. Proteins are inserted into the ER in eukaryotes and the plasma membrane in prokaryotes by the Sec61-based translocon. Data from seve...

MODIFIED ONE- FINGER LAPAROSCOPY TECHNIQUE

We used the modified one finger laparoscopy technique on 100 patients and found it to be successful in 87% of cases. No major complication occurred during or after such operations. However, we think that this technique is accompanied by three important problems: 1) The CO2 gas is lost f1"om the subumbilical incision, 2) A secondary fascial layer is present in some patients, and 3) There i...
